Frequently asked questions about using Afterpay for travel

Which retailers already offer book now, pay later options like Afterpay?

Afterpay is not the only option available if you want to book your travel now and pay it off over time. Similar programs like Zip Pay and Zip Money offer payment schemes like Afterpay. Plus, plenty of airlines, hotels and online travel agents provide lay-by options of their own. Some examples include:

Holiday packages and tours

Activities, day tours and experiences

How does Afterpay work for travel?

That's the best part. Paying for your travel via Afterpay works the same way as regular shopping products. Choose your airfares, accommodation, tours, cars or experiences and then:
  • Fill out your information. As with any purchase, complete the required information for the booking.
  • Choose Afterpay. Once you're at the final stage of checkout, simply pick the Afterpay option. Expect to be directed straight to the Afterpay website to complete the rest of the payment.

What happens after I buy travel with Afterpay?

Once you've purchased your travel, 4 interest-free fortnightly repayments will be made from your registered account. Just make sure the funds are available at the time of the scheduled repayment.

What are the pros and cons of Afterpay?

Pros

  • No need to pay fares all at once if you're short on cash
  • Interest-free payments
  • 8 weeks to pay it off
  • High spending maximums
  • Instant approval
  • Late fees are capped at 25% of the original order value (maximum of $68)

Cons

  • Afterpay purchases have payment fees
  • First payment can work out higher than the rest
  • Must be over the age of 18
  • Late fees apply if the funds aren't paid on time
  • Refunds can get messy as they go through the provider's policy and not Afterpay's

What is the Afterpay spending limit for travel?

You can use Afterpay for purchases up to $3,000.

If your booking is higher than Afterpay's limit you won't be able to select it as a payment method. For example, on Jetstar's site, we made a test booking for higher than the $3,000 Afterpay threshold and it was not available as a payment option.

While not necessarily available on the above sites, other buy now pay later programs such as Zip Money and Humm do have higher limits and partner with some travel booking sites.

Can you pay for your trip with split Afterpay payments?

Generally, no. Payment splitting would be up to the discretion of the site you're booking through but after testing a few travel sites offering Afterpay, we didn't see a split payment option available where you could put part of the purchase on a credit card or pay via PayPal.

You may be able to use a voucher or gift card for part of the purchase and pay the remaining balance with Afterpay.

Am I charged interest on Afterpay travel purchases?

If you make your repayments on time, you won't be charged interest or late fees.

If you're new to Afterpay, your first payment of 25% is due at the time of transaction, with another 25% payment due every 2 weeks until the purchase is paid for in full.

If you don't make your payments on time you will be charged a late fee. Orders under $40 will incur a maximum fee of 25% of the original order. Orders over $40 will be charged a $10 fee on late payments and a further $7 if you still haven't paid within 7 days of the initial late fee being charged. This is capped at $68.

What exactly is Afterpay?

In case you're not yet across it, Afterpay works similarly to an interest-free loan. It allows you to make purchases or bookings online and in-store and pay the cost of the purchase back in fortnightly instalments over 8 weeks. The beauty of it is that you don't have to wait until you've completed your payments to call the item your own.

You'll need to set up an account to get started, but once you do, you can use Afterpay to buy everything from fashion to flights.
