Dad day delirium: Aussies set to drop $950 million on Father’s Day
Australians are tipped to spend big this Father's Day, according to new research by Finder.
A Finder survey of 1,073 respondents revealed 2 in 5 (43%) Aussies – equivalent to 8.7 million people – plan to celebrate their dad this weekend.
Of those planning to mark the occasion, the average person is set to spend $109, bringing the nationwide total to $950 million.
That's substantially more than the $82 Aussies forked out on their mums for Mother's Day.
Clothing (12%), a meal at a restaurant (11%), and alcohol (10%) are the top gifts Aussies are planning to purchase for their father figures.
Chocolate (9%), homemade gifts or food (8%) and something for his home or car (8%) are also popular.
Chris Jager, shopping expert at Finder, said Aussies are gearing up to celebrate their dads in a big way.
"While many Australians are feeling financially fatigued, the desire to spoil fathers on this special day remains.
"Our findings reveal that Aussies will be spoiling dad more than mum this year.
"Gift-givers intend to spend approximately one-third more on Father's Day compared to Mother's Day."
The research found women (51%) are more likely than men (36%) to be celebrating Father's Day.
Despite this, men are planning to spend more on their gifts ($120) compared to women ($101).
Jager said Father's Day doesn't have to be expensive.
"Many households are grappling with the challenge of wanting to celebrate their dads while also navigating growing financial constraints due to the rising cost of living.
"Some are getting creative, opting for heartfelt gestures and DIY presents that carry sentimental value without breaking the bank.
"Those who have siblings should consider pooling their resources together and purchasing a joint gift.
"There are plenty of Father's Day sales on at the moment, allowing you to save up to 70% on popular items like clothes, grooming products and tech," Jager said.
