International tourism to Australia is on the rise, and our recommendations for the best deals for that average spend.

This year's International Visitors Survey Results shows the number of visitors per year is now 7.1 million, with spending hitting a whopping $37.9 billion in total. This is based on spend inside Australia, so it includes all hotel stays, tours, sightseeing, food and drink, shopping, domestic flights and car hire.

Not only are international visitors spending 9% more than last year, they're staying here for 8% longer too. The median length of stay differs dramatically depending on where the tourists come from. Japanese visitors only stay an average of five days, while Indian visitors tip the scales the other way with an average 28-day visit. The median visit length was 10 days.

That got us wondering: what would we do with a 10-day holiday in Australia? And what EXACTLY does the average Australian trip look like?

We've crunched the numbers and come up with some suggestions for the "average" Australian trip based on those figures. So we've got $5364 to spend (excluding flights to get here), and 10 days to do it.

Here are three different itineraries (all of which fit into the average budget) for you to maximise that staycation this year:

The "bit of everything" holiday

Are you the type of traveller that wants to feel like you've seen as much as possible?

Australia is BIG, so it's pretty hard to cram in all the best sights into a 10-day trip, but this Go Way eight-day tour has managed to squeeze in Sydney's greatest hits, a trip to the Great Barrier Reef and some desert exploration at Uluru.

Get ready to tick these corkers off your bucket list: Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House, Bondi Beach, Ayer's Rock, Great Barrier Reef and the Queensland Rainforest.

Spend:

The moderate tour is $1853 per person and includes all accommodation and transfers, but only a few breakfasts. The tour also starts in Sydney but ends in Carins, so you'll need to get a flight back to Sydney – this will cost about $150.

This means what's left over is your spend for most of your food, drinks, add-on excursions and souvenir shopping– working out at about $336 per day.

The "beach break" holiday

All about beach luxury and relaxation? Don't worry, we've got you covered.

Forget seeing as much as possible and stay put - you could blow the whole $5364 on a luxury nine-night stay at Australia's most idyllic hotel.

Try Hamilton Island for 10 nights and spend your days snorkelling, sunbathing, dining and sailing in the Whitsundays.

Spend:

This 5 days for the price of 4 offer works out at $1450 per person for 10 nights. A full day reef cruise from the island is $220.

You flight to Hamilton Island from Sydney or Melbourne would be $160 each way, leaving approximately $330 per day for food, souvenirs, drinks, sightseeing and lots of sunblock.

The "off-the-beaten-track" explorer

To be really off the beaten track, you'd want to piece together a trip yourself. But if you're not quite sure, we can recommend a few tours to string together for a fully adventurous staycation with not an Opera House in sight.

Start off in Darwin and hop on this three-day 4WD NT adventure from Intrepid. You'll see Kakadu National Park, Jim Jim Falls and Lichfield. Once you're back in Darwin, there's no time for rest as you'll need to board a Greyhound bus straight down to Alice Springs to start your next adventure tour. The six-day Alice Springs to Adelaide overland kicks off with a visit to the Olgas and a tour around Uluru with an Aboriginal guide, followed by an outback road trip, stopping in Coober Pedy, Quorn and finishing in Adelaide (where you have about 24 hours to discover the wine, food and art of South Australia's cultural hub).

Spend:

Your first 4WD tour comes in at $795 including most meals, while the overland tour is $890. The Greyhound bus ride inbetween totals $190 and a flight back to where you started your trip (Darwin) will be about $200.

This leaves around $325 per day for extras - but most of your meals are included already. After all that sleeping in a tent or underground, perhaps a last luxury night in a hotel is in order.
