Things to consider when buying one of the best 65-inch TVs
The 65-inch TV is now the standard size for Australian homes. It strikes the perfect balance: large enough to provide a cinematic experience in a lounge room, but not so physically dominant that it requires structural reinforcement of your walls. However, jumping up to this size does require some planning.
Viewing distance is critical
Many people worry that 65 inches is too big, but with modern 4K resolution, you can sit surprisingly close to the screen without seeing pixels. Ideally, you should aim for a distance of 2.5 metres to 3 metres.
Motion handling for sports and action
When you enlarge a screen, you also enlarge its flaws. Motion blur that was invisible on a smaller 50-inch TV can become obvious and distracting on a 65-inch panel, particularly during fast-paced footy matches or action movies.
For a 65-inch TV, we strongly recommend looking for a panel with a 100Hz or 120Hz refresh rate. Budget TVs often stick to 50Hz/60Hz, which can result in a stuttering or "jerky" picture when the action speeds up.
Furniture and stand width
This is the most common trap buyers fall into. Unlike older TVs that had a central pedestal stand, most 65-inch TVs use two feet positioned at the far edges of the screen to support the weight.
A 65-inch TV is roughly 145cm wide. If your entertainment unit is only 120cm wide, the TV feet will not fit. Before you buy, measure your cabinet width. If your furniture is too narrow, look for models that specifically feature a Central Stand (like some Hisense and Sony models) or be prepared to buy a universal VESA pedestal stand separately.
Reflection handling
A 65-inch screen is essentially a large black mirror. If your living room has windows opposite the TV wall, reflections can be a major issue during the day.
If you have a bright room, Mini-LED (Samsung Neo QLED, Hisense U Series) is generally the better choice. These screens can get incredibly bright, punching through the glare. OLED screens look incredible in the dark, but their glass screens can be quite reflective, though newer models like the Samsung S95F have an anti-reflective coating that helps manage this. If you want OLED in a bright room, look for models with matte coatings or high-brightness panels (MLA or QD-OLED).
Gaming ports (HDMI 2.1)
If you plan to connect a PS5 or Xbox Series X, pay close attention to the ports. You need HDMI 2.1 slots to get 4K at 120Hz. While many premium 65-inch TVs have four of these ports, some mid-range models only have two.
The catch is that one of those two ports is often the "eARC" port required for your soundbar. This leaves you with only one high-speed port for your consoles. If you own multiple consoles, look for a TV with four full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports (like LG or Samsung high-end models) to avoid swapping cables.
Getting it home
Do not underestimate the size of the box. A boxed 65-inch TV will not fit in a standard sedan or even many small hatchbacks. The box must be transported upright to avoid cracking the panel. Unless you have a large SUV, ute, or van, we highly recommend paying for delivery. The small delivery fee is worth it to avoid cracking your new screen before you even get it inside.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 65-inch TV considered large?
A 65-inch is considered a medium-sized TV.
How far should I sit away from a 65-inch TV?
To avoid eye strain, you should sit between 2.5 and 4 metres away from a 65-inch TV.
What are the dimensions of a 65-inch TV?
While bezel sizes vary slightly, a standard 65-inch TV is approximately 145cm wide and 83cm tall. With the stand attached, the depth is usually between 25cm and 30cm.
At what height should I mount a 65-inch TV?
The center of the TV screen should be at eye level when you are seated. For a 65-inch TV, this usually means the bottom of the TV should be roughly 60-65cm off the floor. Avoid mounting it too high (like above a fireplace) as this can cause neck strain.
What's the difference between OLED and QLED?
OLED TVs have self-illuminating displays with organic compounds that emit light when an electric current passes through them. This enables individual pixel control, resulting in deeper blacks, richer colours, better contrast, and wider viewing angles compared to LED TVs. Meanwhile, QLED TVs are backlit LEDs, using Quantum Dot technology for a wider colour range, improved brightness, and more HDR options than OLED TVs.
Which is better LG or Samsung TV?
When it comes to TVs, LG and Samsung are two of the most popular brands. Both offer a wide range of models with plenty of features and technologies. LG TVs have great picture quality, especially their OLED TVs, which offer the best contrast ratio on the market. Meanwhile, Samsung has some excellent QLED options for budget shoppers who want a bright display and good colour accuracy.
What TV has the best lifespan?
LED TVs typically have the longest lifespan, lasting up to 100,000 hours before they start to dim. OLED TVs come in second with a lifespan of around 30,000-50,000 hours. On the other hand, QLED TVs are estimated to last only 10-15 years before they show signs of aging.
Can I mount a 65-inch TV on plasterboard?
A 65-inch TV weighs between 20kg and 35kg. You cannot hang this on plasterboard (drywall) alone. You must mount the bracket into the timber or metal studs behind the wall. If the studs are not in the right place, you may need a plywood reinforcement plate or professional installation.
What's the best time of the year to buy a new TV?
The best time to buy a TV is usually around the holidays when retailers offer big discounts. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are some of the year's biggest shopping days, so that's when you can expect to find the best deals.
Which is better for 65-inch: 4K or 8K?
At 65 inches, 8K resolution is generally considered unnecessary. The human eye struggles to see the difference between 4K and 8K at this size unless you are sitting less than a meter away. 4K remains the sweet spot for value and performance.
