The best treadmills in Australia

Are you in the market for a treadmill to sweat it out at home? You're spoiled for choice, as there are tons of options for different needs and price points. But because the home gym equipment market is more crowded than ever, you might find yourself overwhelmed when shopping.

To find the best treadmill for your needs, it's important to consider how you'll be using the equipment. For example, if you're a runner, you'll need a treadmill with a higher top speed and a larger running belt than a walker requires. The number of incline levels and built-in workout programs is also important, while ease of use is a must. Price is also a huge factor – but fear not, there is a treadmill for every budget. From $200 to more than $5,000, there is a treadmill for you and your fitness goals.

For this list, we searched for the highest-rated treadmills from various brands such as Nordic Track, Everfit, Lifespan Fitness and Assault Fitness. We then compared them with other treadmills in the same category, finding the best options for every fitness level, workout space and budget.

Read more detail on our methodology below.

We analysed customer reviews and ratings (as of August 2023) as well as key product features to make a shortlist. For the best cheap category, we evaluated models priced at $500 and below, while we picked treadmills above $2,500 when choosing the top option for the best premium category.

Types of treadmills

Broadly speaking, treadmills can be split into 2 categories:

  • Motorised/electric. The most common type of treadmill, motorised varieties let you program your desired speed. The running belt then starts moving automatically and keeps on moving until you push the stop button.
  • Manual. Manual treadmills obviously don't need to be plugged into a power point. Instead, you make the belt move when you start walking or running. This means you set the pace as you run, which, depending on your enthusiasm for exercise, could be a good or bad thing. While manual treadmills are often cheaper entry-level products, there are also high-end versions available with curved running belts.

Dig a little deeper and you'll find that there are a few more subcategories to explore.

For example, while some treadmills are specifically designed for home use only, there are also commercial-grade machines you can get for your home gym that are designed to withstand heavy-duty use. Some treadmills are designed for walking only, while others are suited to running at high speeds. And then there are incline trainers, which let you tackle inclines of up to 40%.

The right type of treadmill for you will depend on your fitness level and goals, how much space you have to work with and your budget.

How to compare treadmills

There's a lot to consider when choosing a treadmill for your home gym. Here are the key factors you should take into account:

How the treadmill will be used

First and foremost, have a clear idea of how you will use the treadmill. Will it be used for running at high speed, walking or maybe helping you recover from an injury? Alternatively, do you need a treadmill to suit users at a range of different fitness levels?

Once you know exactly what you need for your cardio workouts you can start comparing your options.

Price

Entry-level treadmills start from as low as $250 and can cost up to around $1,000. Mid-range models commonly fall in the $1,000–$3,500 price bracket, with commercial-quality machines typically found above that price point.

There are extra costs to consider too, such as delivery and assembly (if available). And if you want interactive and guided workouts to go with your high-end machine, these usually require a monthly or annual subscription.

Size

There are 2 factors to consider when comparing treadmill sizes:

  • The size of the running belt. The belt will need to be large enough for you to exercise safely and comfortably. For example, runners will need longer and wider belts to suit the length of their stride as well as any side-to-side movement.
  • The size of the whole machine. Treadmills can take up quite a bit of floor space, so make sure it’s small enough to fit in your workout area. If space is at a premium, look for a model that folds away when not in use.

Maximum speed

Check that the treadmill's listed maximum speed will suit your exercise needs. While some top out at around 16km/h, which should be enough for many users, some high-end machines designed for runners can go above 20km/h.

Levels of incline

Changing the level of incline allows you to ramp up the difficulty of your workout and more closely replicate real-world running conditions. Check how many different levels of incline are available and the maximum and minimum angles – many machines only offer uphill inclines but some can also be tilted down to simulate running down a slope. Also check how to change the incline, as some machines offer automatic adjustment but others can only be changed manually.

Programs and workouts

Basic treadmills simply allow you to set your speed and incline and then start running. However, many offer a choice of built-in workout programs to help you target specific fitness goals, such as HIIT and fat-burn workouts.

At the higher end of the price range, some models offer access to extensive libraries of interactive workouts, where the trainer you see on your treadmill screen automatically adjusts your treadmill settings and offers motivation while you run. Some also let you run with or against others through virtual courses based on real-world settings. However, these interactive services usually require an ongoing subscription fee.

Additional features

  • Ease of use. A treadmill that's easy to use is one that's more likely to be used on a regular basis. Questions to consider include:
    • Are all controls clearly labelled and easy to access?
    • Is it simple and straightforward to choose your desired program or settings?
    • Is the running belt comfortable and does it offer enough cushioning?
    • What key data can you keep track of during your workout and is the display easy to read?
    • Is there a safety key in case you fall?
    • Is the treadmill reasonably quiet when in use?

You may be able to find the answers to some of these questions via online research, but testing a treadmill out in-store before you buy is the best way to work out if it's right for you.

  • Ease of assembly. Are assembly and installation included in the purchase price or will you need to build the treadmill yourself? If you have to DIY, check what other buyers have to say about the ease of assembly.
  • Portability and storage. If you're regularly going to be moving your treadmill from room to room, check how much it weighs. Built-in wheels can make transport easier, while many models also fold up or down to allow for compact storage when not in use.
  • Features and accessories. Check the specs sheet to find out what features the treadmill has to ensure more convenient and enjoyable workouts. These may include:
    • Water bottle holders
    • Tablet and phone holders
    • Built-in speakers
    • Heart rate monitor
    • A fan to keep you cool while you sweat it out
    • A TV screen
    • Bluetooth and/or Wi-Fi connectivity
    • USB ports
  • Warranty and returns. Don't forget to check the manufacturer's warranty to find out how long it lasts and exactly what it does and doesn't cover. And if you're buying online, it's always a good idea to check the terms and conditions of the returns policy in case you're unhappy with your purchase.
