Over the past few years, Sony has been dominating the wireless noise-cancelling earbuds space – first with the WF-1000XM3s and now with the WF-1000XM4s.
While Sony tends to be the most expensive in the market, it's with good reason. Its best-in-class audio quality, noise cancellation and battery inclusions mean they're future-proofed.
This also means that you can wait for them to go on sale and they will still be absolutely good enough to rival whatever else is on the shelves at the time.
Find out more about why we love these in our full review of the Sony WF-1000XM4 wireless earbuds.
Or if you want a sprinkle of that Sony magic on the cheap, we highly recommend you check out its $128 Sony WF-C500 buds.

Technics' latest true wireless headphones will delight people looking for excellent sound quality, decent noise cancelling and a good battery life. But the kicker is they won't have to pay as much for it.
To be fair, at $379 they aren't exactly cheap. But they don't have the same eye-watering RRPs as the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 or the Sony WF-1000XM4.
And despite not having the same name recognition as these brands, our reviewer said these were the best wireless earbuds she had ever used.
Sony WF-1000XM4

So nice, we've included it twice! The Sony WF-1000XM4 buds are not only the best all-around, they are also up there when it comes to balancing the sound quality and Active Noise-Cancellation (ANC)
The active noise cancellation (ANC) in the XM4s is incredible for small earbuds, allowing you to block out external noise on the street, on public transport or in the office.
And if you do prefer to be more aware of your surroundings, the transparency mode is excellent. It still mutes noises around you, but lets enough in so you don't completely lose yourself in whatever you're listening to. It's only beaten out by the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 (which we'll get to) but it's close.
The sound offered by the XM4s is truly best in class. The level of complexity, richness and balance of the lows, mids and highs are incredible. You can hardly believe that you're not listening through over-ear headphones.
Coupled with a good battery life and sleek design, the Sony XM4s more than deserve the top spot when it comes to high end true wireless earbuds.

ANC in wireless earbuds has come leaps and bounds over the past couple of years, and at the very top of the pack are the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3.
Previously this title belonged to its predecessor, the Momentum True Wireless 2. And once again Sennheiser has proven why it's at the top of the noise-cancellation game. Although its worth mentioning the Sony WF-1000XM4 are a very close second in this category.
The Sennheiser Momentum true Wireless 3 do a brilliant job of blocking out a range of environmental noise when you want to be in your own little world. And on the flip side, their transparency mode also gives you the option to be more aware of your surroundings.
And this year you even have the option to set up 'sound zones' based on your location. For example, you could have active noise-cancellation toggled on in the office, but as soon as you leave the buds switch to transparency mode so you can hear traffic and announcements on your commute home.
You can read more about these excellent buds in our full review of the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3. We also had a chat about these bad boys in this video review:

Jabra Elite 3
Best under $200

Image: Tegan Jones/Finder
Finder Score:
Pros
- Great price
- Good sound for the price tag
- Comfortable
Cons
- No noise cancellation, but this makes sense for the price
- Earbuds like this don’t feel the most secure
- No water resistance
Buy now
It's shocking how good the Jabra Elite 3 are, especially for the price. Coming in at just $119, they're closer to the "best under $100" category than the "best under $200".
These little guys are incredibly comfortable, have great battery life and sound much better than they have any right to.
While you won't find ANC here, the Jabra Elite 3 does a damn good job at noise isolation.
We didn't expect them to be this good and they have one of the best audio tech surprises of 2021.
Apple AirPods Pro

- Much more comfortable fit
- Fast pairing with iOS devices
- Smaller microphone stubs make them less obvious
Cons
- Relatively expensive
- New case is wider than the originals
- Fixed battery makes their future unclear

This is the latest version of Apple's most loved AirPods and has a 4.4 out of 5 rating on Amazon Australia.
It is also Amazon's top pick for AirPods and features in our list of best earphones and earbuds in Australia.
This version is more comfortable to wear and comes in a range of sizes. The sound quality is also far superior in this model, as is the noise cancellation.
The battery offers 4.5 hours of listening with noise cancellation on and 5 hours with noise cancellation off. It's worth noting that these earbuds are on the expensive side and there are certainly cheaper options that will do the job.

Skullcandy Push Active
Best for working out

Finder Score:
Pros
- Ear hooks are great for exercise
- Comfortable
- Excellent battery
Cons
- Huge charging case
- No active noise cancellation
- No wireless charging option

If you're looking for some earbuds for working out, but don't want to worry about losing one, we've got your back.
The Skullcandy Push Active wireless earbuds have an ear loop that keeps them in place while exercising. It looks quite dorky, but it's a great feature and something we also loved in the Powerbeats Pro a couple of years back.
It's also comfortable, sweat resistant and has a massive battery life – 10 hours plus another 34 from the charging case. This is the best battery life we have seen in true wireless earbuds.
As for the sound, it does a great job, especially for sports-focused earbuds. It's not best in class, but with an RRP of $179.95 we don't expect them to be.

AirPods 3
Best for comfort

Image: Tegan Jones/Finder
Finder Score:
Pros
- Great battery life
- Improved sound
- Spatial audio
- Comfortable
Cons
- No noise cancellation or transparency modes
- Sound leaks in very easily
- No ear tip customisation options
- You can get the AirPods Pro for roughly the same price

Apple surprised us all towards the end of 2021 by releasing a new pair of regular AirPods that are actually better than the AirPods Pro in some ways.
They offer much better sound than their Pro counterpart, as well as improved battery life and MagSafe wireless charging.
They are also the most comfortable and secure true wireless earbuds we have used all year. It's just worth keeping in mind that they don't have ear tip options, so one size may not fit all. They're also not the best pick if you value noise-cancellation above all else.
Sony LinkBuds
Best for transparency

Image: Tegan Jones/Finder
Finder Score:
Pros
- Weird but comfortable design
- Extremely compact case
- Great if you don’t like noise-isolating buds
Cons
- No wireless charging
- Not the best bass
- Distortion at higher volumes

Active noise-cancellation (ANC) has quickly become one of the most sought-after features in true wireless earbuds.
But not everyone likes it.
Sometimes, people prefer to be aware of their environment, especially while commuting or exercising in public. And while many earbuds allow you to turn ANC off, not everyone wants to pay a premium for a key feature they won't use.
Enter the Sony LinkBuds. These extremely small lads have an actual hole in them, allowing for a consistent stream of environmental noise at all times.
They also offer pretty decent sound quality and battery life, long-term comfort as well as incredibly cool touch controls. You can actually tap in front of your ear to control them since the buds themselves are so small.
