Prime Video offers a generous content library and a competitive price.

Amazon

Prime Video is one of the longest-standing streaming services in Australia, having been here since the end of 2016. In that time, it has grown its catalogue to have the most titles on a streaming service in Australia.

It has invested heavily in quality, original content and is responsible for some of the most talked about shows on the planet. So here are some things you might want to know before giving it a try.

How much does Prime Video cost in Australia?

Prime Video costs $9.99 a month in Australia. You can also save if you sign up for a year for $79.

You get more than just a streaming service. You're also signing up for Amazon Prime, which aside from the ability to watch movies and TV shows gives you extras such as free expedited delivery on eligible products, plus free music, podcasts, games and more.

In September 2023, the service announced that starting in 2024, Prime Video shows and movies will include limited advertisements in Australia. There will be an ad-free option which is expected to cost more. The price of that option will be shared by Prime Video at a later date.

On the movie front, you might want to check out Shotgun Wedding, My Policeman, Catherine Called Birdy, Air and more.

That being said, it's not just originals in Prime Video's library, there are thousands of other shows and movies. Check out our list of Prime Video's best shows and movies.

Prime Video is also developing local Australian content. It has titles such as cricket docuseries The Test, AFL docuseries Making Their Mark and swimming doco Head Above Water.

It's not just sports documentaries though. Other local titles include Luxe Listings Sydney and Burning. And perhaps in a big coup, Prime Video was part of rescuing Neighbours and is streaming new episodes.

After previously screening swimming events and WNBA, Prime Video has further branched out into sport by screening some cricket tournaments. It will screen all ICC events until the end of 2027 in Australia including the men's and women's T20 and ODI World Cups.

Does Prime Video have a free trial?

Yes, Prime Video is free with Amazon Prime, which comes with a 30-day free trial. This gives you access to all of the services Amazon Prime offers, including Prime Video, Amazon Music, Prime Reading and free shipping on eligible products.

What are Prime Video Channels?

Prime Video Channels are add-on subscriptions you can get through Prime Video for easy access to all your entertainment in 1 app. Choose from 18 services to then access with a single Prime login. This includes 4 apps not available elsewhere in Australia.

Prices for these channels vary and will be extra on top of your monthly Prime Video subscription. They are additional, paid subscriptions that allow you to stream content from third-party entertainment services. The advantage here is that you'll be able to access any of these services directly through the Prime Video app, simplifying the entire streaming process.

Here are the services available via Prime Video Channels in Australia:

What features does Prime Video have?

Prime Video can be clunky and difficult to navigate, but the service underwent a redesign and is rolling out a new and improved interface.

Otherwise, the service comes packed with premium features that make watching content a breeze. That includes the basics – parental controls, subtitles and audio descriptions – as well as some fun extras:

  • Multiple profiles: Prime Video allows you to create and manage multiple profiles within your account with content tailored to each profile. You can have up to 6 user profiles within Prime Video on a single Amazon account.
  • 4K video quality: A big chunk of the catalogue is available in 4K video quality, so you can watch on the big screen in style. It's all available in the 1 plan and you don't have to pay extra to access 4K like some other streaming services.
  • Watch Parties: Users can chat with up to 100 friends in the same country while watching movies and TV shows online together. Titles that are included with Prime can be enjoyed as part of a Watch Party as well as titles you rent or buy – but only if all watchers rented or bought the title.
  • Offline viewing: You can download content on your mobile devices or laptop via the Prime Video app to watch offline.
  • Dialogue Boost: This lets you increase the volume of dialogue relative to background music and effects on select Amazon Originals, making it easier to hear.
  • A content-forward navigation bar: The new UI provides faster access to Prime Video's various categories, including active add-on subscriptions such as Hayu and Paramount+. Additionally, a brand new "Prime" destination allows users to explore a variety of content available at no additional cost with a Prime Membership.
  • Streamlining add-on subscriptions: Users can now easily browse, sign up for and manage the 19 add-on subscriptions available on Prime Video via the "Subscriptions" category in the revitalized navigation bar.
  • Personalized recommendations: The new "Made for You" collections group titles that align with users' interests, simplifying the process of finding what to watch. Content can also be browsed through the "Top 10 in Australia" and "Trending Show" collections, with extra clarity on whether the film or series is available through Prime or an add-on subscription.
  • Superior UI: Prime Video's user interface now appears smoother and more polished. New visual enhancements include title card animations and dissolve transitions between pages. The UI has been carefully engineered to work across all devices, both old and new.
