What to consider when purchasing headphones on Black Friday (29th November)?

Wired or wireless?

For convenience, it's hard to pass up the freedom of wireless headphones. Not only do they untether you from your stereo, phone or other audio devices, but they also save you from ever having to deal with knotted cables and frayed wires again.

That said, wireless headphones have their fair share of shortcomings. Besides typically costing more than wired headphones, they also require that you keep them charged, or you'll end up on a long commute with a dead battery and no good way of passing the time. Wireless headphones are also susceptible to interference from other Bluetooth devices, potentially leading to low-quality audio or drop-outs in some tech-crowded environments.

In-ear, on-ear or over-ear?

The three main types of headphones offer distinct audio experiences tailored to different needs. In general, over-ear headphones are capable of the highest-quality sound due to their larger, more-powerful components. Their round cans also block out ambient noise more effectively than other headphones, plus they're usually more comfortable for extended periods of use.

In-ear headphones (or earbuds) are the lightest and most portable of headphone types, making them a popular choice for use in public environments. They don't deliver the same level of sound quality or noise cancellation as other headphones, but they're cheaper, less conspicuous and easier to cram in your pocket while you're out and about.

On-ear headphones occupy the middle ground between in-ear and over-ear headphones. They don't fully cover your ears, so they don't block out background noise quite as well as an over-ear set, but their size allows for higher audio quality than a pair of earbuds. They tend to be more comfortable than earbuds, too, with foam padding making them better suited to prolonged use.
