Have you been following the debate over the legalisation of CBD oil in Australia? Well, starting from Monday 1 February, you'll be able to get your hands on low-dose cannabis oil, over the counter, without a prescription.
Does this mean you'll be able to walk into your local pharmacy and pick one up today? Unfortunately not. You might be able to pick up some from Chemist Warehouse or JSHealth but check your local pharmacy first. Did you know that you can also get CBD oil for your pet and can aid with pain, separation anxiety and itchy skin. Check out the ranges at places like Pet Circle, Petbarn or My Pet Warehouse.
Each product that goes on sale will require individual approval by the Therapeutic Goods Administration.
What does a low-dose of cannabis oil really mean?
According to a media release from the Therapeutic Goods Administration, Australian adults will be able to purchase a low-dose CBD, with a maximum of up to 150mg per day. You can get it over the counter, without a prescription.
This will also include limits on dosage form and packaging requirements (for example, child restraint closures).
Previously, if you wanted to access medical marijuana, you had to apply for a prescription through the Special Access Scheme (SAS). This is a lengthy and expensive process.
What is CBD oil and what can it do for you?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of over 100 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids found in Cannabis Sativa, better known as marijuana. It's not psychoactive, meaning it doesn't get you "high". It's made by extracting from the plant and then diluting it with a carrier oil such as coconut or hemp seed oil.
CBD oil has a variety of claimed medical effects. Studies have shown benefits for sufferers of sleep apnea, anxiety, arthritis, epilepsy and more.
Most of the CBD that will be available will be taken orally.
