• What should I pack in my campervan?

  You will find that most rentals provide some everyday items in your campervan like plates, bowls, cups, cutlery, saucepans, frying pans, chopping board and sometimes even kettles, wine glasses and a toaster.

  Linen and bedding is often provided for free or a small fee and includes pillows, pillowcases, doonas, sheets and towels.

  Here are a few other things you should consider when hitting the road in a campervan.

  • Driver's licence
  • Printout of any travel documents – remember you won't have access to hotel lobbies for printing as you go
  • Day pack
  • Camera, charger, extra batteries and spare memory stick
  • CDs or phone adaptor for tunes
  • Watch with alarm
  • Mobile phone and charger
  • Sunscreen
  • Plastic bags: handy to store your laundry, wet towels and rubbish
  • Ziploc bags or containers to store leftovers or carry snacks for day trips
  • Sandals or thongs to wear in questionable campground showers
  • Clothes pegs and hangers
  • Dishwashing detergent
  • Toilet rolls

  Your rental agency should provide you with a list of what's included so make sure to go through it before you leave so you don't double up unnecessarily.

• What size campervan can I drive?

  Generally, you can drive a campervan up to 4.5 tonnes as long as you hold a current and valid driver's licence with no restrictions.

  This should cover most standard rentals but there are minor differences from state-to-state so make sure to ask your rental company what rules apply to your chosen vehicle.

  The majority of campervan rentals are manual transmission but there are a few exceptions. If you're not comfortable driving manual, make sure to include this in your reservation.

• Do campervans need powered sites

  Most campervans are supplied with two batteries, one to operate the living equipment and the other to run the engine. The batteries recharge when connected to mains power or when driving the vehicle.

  We recommend that the vehicle is plugged into mains power at least every two nights as a full charge will last for approximately 12-14 hours of use.

• Do campervans have bathrooms?

  A motorhome is usually the only model with a bathroom but some high-top campervan models do include them.

• Do campervans have toilets?

  A motorhome should have a toilet as they are designed to be fully self-contained. Some campervan models have toilets but they are rare.

• Do campervans have electricity?

  Yes, most of your lights and living equipment can run off the battery but appliances like TVs, microwaves and air-con or heating require connection to the mains power. Likewise, if you need to charge your phone, laptop or camera.

• How much is campervan hire?

  Costs vary based on features, number of people and the type of vehicle, but as a guide:

  • • From $25 per day for a station wagon rental with double bed
    • A high-top camper for two people is from $50 per day or from $90 per day for four people
    • A self-contained motorhome with toilet and shower jumps up to $160 per day for four people

• Can campervans park anywhere?

  The rules for free camping can differ with every local council so while it is possible to find somewhere to camp for free, the safest option is to park in one of the extensive network of caravan parks in all major tourist centres and most towns.
