What is the best dishwasher for me?

Most kitchens will fit a full-sized dishwasher, but if you have a small or unusually shaped kitchen, there are several other types of dishwashers for you to choose from including drawer, slimline and compact dishwashers. The 2 most common types of dishwashers are freestanding and integrated.

FreestandingFreestanding dishwashers are made to be installed independently of your kitchen benchtop. They don't require any under-bench space and can be removed easily if you move homes.
Built-inBuilt-in dishwashers are installed directly into your kitchen cabinets underneath the countertop and don't need to be attached to top or side panels. They are easiest to install during a renovation or when building the kitchen.
IntegratedIntegrated dishwashers have a panel on the front that matches your kitchen cabinetry. They're designed to blend seamlessly into your kitchen. Semi-integrated models have controls built into the outer panel of the dishwasher, whereas fully integrated models have controls concealed behind the door.

How to compare dishwashers

Once you've decided which type of dishwasher will work best in your kitchen, consider what features you'll want. Keep in mind, a dishwasher with more high-end features will cost more.

Kitchen space

Take stock of your kitchen structure. If you're making a dishwasher purchase as part of a kitchen renovation, it will be easier to build it in. If you're installing your new dishwasher into your pre-existing cabinetry, consider the existing space in the kitchen.

Energy efficiency

To work out how efficient the dishwasher is and how much it will cost you to run, check its general star rating. Make sure to look at the specific energy usage figures including kWh per year and water usage per wash.

Drying cycle

There are several types of drying functions. Residual heat drying is energy efficient, but not as effective for full loads. Fan-assisted heat is quicker, but less energy efficient. Other specialised drying modes use crystals to absorb moisture and radiate heat. They dry quickly and are energy efficient but they also cost more.

Wash type

You'll need to select a wash program for each cycle. Look out for models that offer eco/bio washes that save water or operate at lower temperatures as well as a quick-wash option suitable for lightly soiled dishes.

Hot or cold water

Some dishwashers run best with a hot-water connection while others should run on cold. If you run hot water, check the recommended maximum hot water inlet temperature. If the water in your pipes exceeds it, you'll need a tempering valve.

Salt dispenser

For those living in an area with hard water (if unsure, check with your local council or water supplier), your dishwasher detergent may not work as well. Look for a model that comes with a salt dispenser to soften the water.

Here are 5 tips to help you get the most out of your new dishwasher:

  1. Make sure your dishes are dishwasher safe. Double-check that your dishes can be put in a dishwasher. Don't put any fine china, delicate or hand-painted dishes in your new appliance.
  2. Don't pre-rinse your dishes. It's a misconception that you need to pre-rinse your dishes before placing them into the dishwasher when just scraping your plate first will do. Pre-rinsing will waste extra water.
  3. Use the right detergent. Even with the best dishwasher, your plates won't get well cleaned if you're not using a quality dishwasher detergent.
  4. Load your dishes correctly. Try to place the dirtiest dishes at the centre of the dishwasher and the ones that only require a light clean in the corners of the basket.
  5. Deep clean your dishwasher. Remember to clean the dishwasher filter and seals and check the spray arms for any blockages. This can help keep your dishwasher as effective as when you bought it and help avoid bad odours.

Hand washing vs dishwasher

If you're willing to fork out for a dishwasher, you'll find it beats out hand washing dishes in a number of ways. Dishwashers generally use less water than hand washing, saving you money and preserving the environment. Check your machine's WELS rating to ensure it uses an efficient and sustainable amount of water.

The appliance is a faster and more convenient method of cleaning up. Dishwashers usually run at a much higher temperature than your hands could handle, meaning they do a better job of killing germs.

On the downside, dishwashers can be expensive and some older models can be noisy. More fastidious customers may find that spending the time vigorously scrubbing dishes can be a better way of removing every speck, especially when compared to less powerful dishwashers.

How to deep clean a dishwasher

It is recommended to deeply clean your dishwasher at least every 2 months to keep it in tip-top shape.

To deep clean your dishwasher, remove its filter, racks and holders. Then clear out any debris and dirt it may have. Wipe the spray arms, walls and corners to ensure any caked-on grease and dirt are removed. Fill a dishwasher-safe bowl with a cup of white vinegar and place it on the bottom of the empty dishwasher. Then run the unit on a hot water cycle.

When the hot cycle ends, remove the bowl and sprinkle about a cup of baking soda along the bottom of your unit. Run a quick cycle to remove remaining stains and caked-on grease. The baking soda will also freshen up your unit's interior.

For the dishwasher doors, use a stainless steel-safe product to remove dirt and grease. You can also use a dishwashing soap and vinegar mixture as a DIY solution.
