E3 2016 vs E3 2017: 60% increase in new IP reveals at E3 2017
48% more games were revealed than at E3 2016.
To many, this year's E3 was a bit of a yawn-fest. While Days Gone continues to look just fine, and Microsoft was obliged to spend a big chunk of its show discussing its new powerhouse console, there were nowhere near as many breathtaking moments as last year's E3. Despite some huge announcements like Metroid Prime 4, Pokémon for Switch and Beyond Good and Evil 2.
In fact, we took a look at each major publisher's conference and crunched the numbers. There was actually a 60% increase in new IPs revealed at E3 2017 when compared against E3 2016. There was also a 48% increase in game reveals.
So with such a spike in new IPs and overall game reveals, you would think E3 2017 would go down in history as the most memorable ever.
However, all this excitement was tempered by the fact that most of these new titles are but an embryo, years away from release. There was also a distinct lack of official release dates for Spider-Man, Days Gone, Crackdown 3, Fire Emblem Warriors, or Detroit: Become Human.
With that said, there are 49 games slated for a 2017 release (approximately 39.5% of all games shown).
Two of the most hotly anticipated video game releases (Red Dead Redemption 2 and The Last of Us 2) were also omitted from the show. Red Dead is less of a surprise considering Rockstar blow the expo off year in, year out, but Joel and Ellie's absence left a lot of fans scratching their heads once Sony's conference wrapped up.
Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann came out on Twitter shortly after E3 wrapped up to say the company wanted to give Uncharted: The Lost Legacy its chance to stand in the spotlight. Which is totally fair. The Lost Legacy seems to become meatier every time we see it, blurring the lines between DLC and full-fledged adventure.
It's more than likely we'll see The Last of Us Part II at this year's PSX (where the game was first announced) which is relatively close (September).
As for when we will see more from this year's reveals, Pokémon for Switch, Metroid Prime 4 and Beyond Good and Evil 2, well your guess is as good as ours but we won't be holding our breath.
