What are the different types of electric shaver?

There are 2 different types of electric shaver. You can choose between a foil head or rotary blades. The foil head option includes a number of fine, angled, exposed blades. This gives you a closer shave with less irritation but it's not suitable for shaving long hair.

Rotary blades spin under a slotted head, which means it's easier to use on long and thick hair. However, this option is usually more difficult to clean compared to a foil head.

How to use an electric shaver

Typically, an electric shaver is used as a dry shave. This means there is no need for water or shaving foam as dry skin is best. If your skin is sensitive, you may want to try to use a pre-shave balm which can help moisturise the skin and reduce irritation.

However, new models are coming out now that are actually suited for a wet shave, meaning you can use it in the shower.

How to clean an electric shaver

A build-up of hair and skin particles can stop your electric shaver from performing to the best of its ability. You may find that you are no longer getting a close shave or the hairs are being pulled out, rather than cut. Every few months, it's a good idea to pull apart the head and deep clean the shaver with hot water and soap, just take care as you disassemble the blades.

On the other hand, daily cleaning after each use can really help maintain the quality of the blades. Some models are suitable to be cleaned with water, so all you need to do is run it under the tap and allow the hairs to go down the drain. Other electric shavers cannot be cleaned with water, so they usually come with a dry cleaning brush to help you get the job done.

What types of electric shavers are available?

  • Foil. A foil razor consists of a slim, curved metal foil that covers the cutting blade. As you move the shaver back and forth over your skin, the blade trims the hair that pushes through the foil. A foil shaver can have up to 5 foils, depending on the model and price tag.
  • Rotary. A rotary razor has 3 or 4 round heads. Below these heads, blades spin and cut the hair.

The different features of individual electric shavers are what set them apart in terms of quality, cost, maintenance and longevity. Determining how often you'll be using the shaver, what you'll be using it for and what functions you'll need will help you figure out how much you'll need to pay.

You'll also need to identify the different features that are important to you. Does the razor need to be plugged in to operate or is it cordless? If it is cordless, how long will it take to charge and how long will a single charge last? How much space will it take up in the bathroom cabinet? Do you need any additional accessories or products?

Electric shaver oil or lubricant

A small container of oil often comes packaged with your electric shaver. However, in time, you will need to buy more oil in order to keep your machine functioning at optimum levels. This oil reduces wear and tear on the blades, diminishes the heat caused by constant friction and goes a long way towards extending the useful life of your shaver.

Trimmer

Some electric shavers have built-in trimmer attachments that allow you to trim back thick or long hair before you shave. This feature is also helpful in managing sideburns and hair lines.
