Tax deduction expenses explained

Hoping to claim a laptop purchase on your upcoming tax return? Be sure to check out the Australia Taxation Office's website so you're well informed about what can legally be claimed as a deduction. The ATO cites 3 "golden rules" for eligible deductions:

    • You must have spent the money yourself and weren't reimbursed.
    • The expenses must directly relate to earning your income.
    • You must have a record to prove it (usually a receipt).

To claim a reduction this year, you will also need to have made your purchase before July 1, 2024.
