4 tips for refurnishing your home on a budget

Thinking about picking up some new furniture, but you're not sure where to start? No problem. We've got this handy guide for you!

1. Determine what you need and check what you already have

So – what sort of furniture do you actually need to get it your place looking how you want?

If you're always hosting guests, maybe a sofa bed would be handy? (check out the Byron Sofa Bed from Koala if so!)

Whatever the case, having a list to work from can be a huge boon, saving you both time and money in the long run.

And of course, before you start shopping, it's worth taking a closer look at what you already have around the house. You'd be surprised at what you can reuse or repurpose. Sometimes all you need is a new lick of paint (or varnish) to get new life out of an older item.

2. Decide on the look you're going for

Now that you've taken stock of your belongings, you can hone in on your preferred theme.

Mid-century and modernist? 70s shag-pile and blacklight posters? Bold Memphis design from the 80s?

No matter what your preferred style may be, it's good to have a clear picture of the look you want to achieve.

For example, the Balmain Bookshelf from Koala is ideal for anyone trying to create a Euro-inspired, mid-century look.

Knowing what you're looking for ahead of time will help you budget accordingly and allow you to shop more selectively.

3. Figure out what you won't compromise on

Even when you're working to a budget, you need to think about the things you're not willing to compromise on. For some, it'll be mattresses, while for others it might be the home office chair.

Whatever your preferences are, it's best to decide ahead of time, before you start spending up on other things that aren't as essential.

4. Think beyond your immediate needs

Buying new furniture isn't just about buying for your immediate circumstances. It's also about prepping for your future.

For example, although you might be flying solo at the moment, maybe it's worth upgrading that single bed to a double or queen?

Keeping the future in mind means that you can buy what you need now – but also enables you to grow your lifestyle without needing to replace everything again in a couple of years!
