Foxtel has long been known as the home of premium television in Australia. Whether you prefer popular sitcoms or the latest premium HBO content, Foxtel has secured the rights to some of the very best small-screen content, plus it delivers sport and movies.

Foxtel offers a full suite of services, including an on-demand streaming option. Those who are looking for something different from a traditional Foxtel connection can access its premium TV and movie library via its subscription service Foxtel Now, or can opt for BINGE and Kayo Sports to stream Foxtel content via the internet.

How much does Foxtel cost in Australia?

On 1 February 2024, Foxtel updated its pricing and packaging. It now only offers 4 packs – the base Foxtel Plus pack, to which you can add an optional Netflix subscription. There are the optional add-ons for sport or movies, or if you want everything (including the Netflix subscription), you can get the Platinum Plus pack.

The base Foxtel Plus package is $70 a month. This is an increase from $52 a month previously, but includes a consolidation of packs by bringing in channels from the previously standalone Favourites and Kids packs. These latter 2 packs are now no longer available.

To get the Sport add-on it will cost a total of $100 a month, while the Movies add-on means you'll be paying $95 a month.

The Platinum Plus package's price has remained unchanged at $140 a month.

Foxtel subscribers can opt for a contract or pay on a month-to-month basis. If you choose the contract route, you can usually score a discount and avoid some of the installation fees.

What is Foxtel Now?

Foxtel Now is an alternative to the traditional Foxtel subscription. It's a video streaming platform that allows you to view Foxtel through an internet connection with a no-lock-in contract. What channels and content does Foxtel offer?

Foxtel offers a huge number of channels through its pay TV service, grouped together into packages.

While there is no specific HBO channel on Foxtel, HBO content is exclusively available through the service in Australia. You get access to HBO shows with the basic Foxtel Plus channel pack, so you don't need any add-ons to get a taste for some of the best television around. Subscribers can watch popular series like House of the Dragon, Game of Thrones, Euphoria and Westworld, as well as enjoy Foxtel originals like The Twelve or The End. Besides, you get access to content from other providers too – including reality series, news and documentaries.

On top of the Foxtel Plus channel pack, you can customise your experience with additional packs that cater to your interests. Sport delivers over 50 sports on 9 live sports channels, while Movies brings you more than 1,000 hours of movies on demand.

You can also add Netflix to your subscription for easy access to your content. All in all, you can personalise your Foxtel subscription so you don't pay extra for anything you don't need.

Foxtel add-ons

Whether you're craving global news coverage or you're looking to watch Foxtel in multiple rooms, there are a number of add-ons that you can tack on at the checkout, each with an additional monthly fee.

From 1 February 2024, Foxtel removed its extra fee for HD and made multiscreen as part of its multiroom fee.

Foxtel hardware

In order to watch Foxtel's pay TV service you're going to need a Foxtel personal video recorder (PVR) box, otherwise known as a set-top box. Depending on your package, budget and what's available at your address, that means either the Foxtel iQ4 or the iQ5. Existing Foxtel customers may have an older box, like the iQ3 or the iQ2. Subscribers use the box to navigate Foxtel, keep up with their favourite titles, record content and more.

The iQ5 box is currently the norm, which doesn't require a traditional cable or satellite installation, only broadband. You will still need an aerial to watch free-to-air TV. The iQ boxes can still be connected to an existing satellite service, where a dish is already installed and working, or connected to your home internet to stream Foxtel content in internet-only mode.

Both the iQ4 and iQ5 are UHD and HD capable and give you access to a whole bunch of streaming apps to have all your entertainment in the same place, such as Netflix, Prime Video and Disney Plus. You need your own subscription to each of these streaming services though. You can add a Netflix subscription as part of your Foxtel package for an extra fee. The iQ5 comes with a detachable external hard drive. You don't need the hard drive to watch Foxtel, but you need it to record live TV. Foxtel have recently added Paramount+ and Stan to their hardware.

In addition to the iQ boxes, customers are also able to access content from their channel packs on a computer or mobile device using the Foxtel GO app. 2 devices can simultaneously use this streaming app, with up to 5 devices linked per account. Compatible devices include iPads, iPhones and Android devices, PC and Mac. You can watch content live and on demand when you're out and about.

Is there any other way to watch Foxtel content?

Want to experience Foxtel without a traditional pay TV subscription? You can do so by subscribing to one (or more) of the company's streaming services. Foxtel Now is the closest thing to the Foxtel experience via the internet. However, BINGE, Kayo and Flash bring you a big specific chunk of Foxtel goodness at a more affordable price.
