Read more…Optus Sport is synonymous with football. Despite dabbling in other sports such as cricket and intending to show the Tokyo 2020 Olympics – which didn't happen since it was delayed by COVID-19 – Optus Sport has doubled down on football. It has been the home of the English Premier League in Australia since 2016. Optus will continue to show the English Premier League until 2028 after it recently signed a deal at the end of 2021. So if you are after Premier League football in the foreseeable future, you need Optus Sport.
Optus Sport combines live and on-demand streams of all EPL matches with dedicated 24/7 programming featuring news, interviews and exclusive insights from football experts. It also features other football leagues and competitions from around the world.
With the app and a subscription to the service, users can enjoy the full Premier League experience at home and on the go, in addition to some extra football coverage. You can watch all the live and on-demand action you can manage on a wide range of devices, from smartphones to the big screen.
Subscriptions to Optus Sport cost $24.99 a month, payable directly through its website, as a special interest channel via Fetch or via the app in the Apple or Google Play store.
There is also an annual subscription available for $229, which is only available via the Optus website.
Eligible Optus customers can access an Optus Sport subscription for $9.99 a month. This was previously free but a price rise announced in May 2022 meant the end of this perk. For Optus customers (excluding prepaid), the Optus Sport subscription is managed through Optus's subscription management platform, Optus SubHub.
The service currently offers the following football competitions and leagues:
With live streams of all matches of the 2022/23 EPL season, there is plenty to offer EPL fans.
One of the most appealing aspects of the Optus coverage is its mini matches. Available in 3-minute (which it calls Quick), 9-minute (Short), 25-minute (Mini), 45-minute (Mega) or 90-minute (Full) packages, there is something to suit all needs. A no spoilers function can also be handy, provided you can stay away from social media.
Optus Sport also offered coverage of the recent European World Cup qualifiers and will do so again for the 2026 qualifiers. In fact, in June 2022, Optus Sport made a press statement claiming it would broadcast over 1,000 matches featuring Europe's top national teams over the next 4 years. It also will feature the 2023 Women's World Cup, which is being staged in Australia. In June 2022, it announced it had the rights to La Liga, the top professional football division in Spain, for multiple years.
Finally, subscribers can also stream classic matches and watch original documentaries.
Optus Sport used to offer a 14-day trial, which is sadly no longer available. Instead, it offers some of its content for free, which regularly includes a limited range of highlights and interviews. Occasionally, Optus Sport offers particular matches to be viewed free, with recent matches including the 2022 Women's FA Cup final and the UEFA Women's Euro 2022 semi-finals and final.
All streaming is available in 1080p HD on supported devices. This can seem a little disappointing to certain consumers, especially with Foxtel offering sports content in 4K quality.
A post from Optus Sport in August 2021 stated "at this stage, Optus Sport does not have any plans to offer 4K; however, we are continually assessing our product mix and 4K broadcast is certainly one of the things we regularly discuss".
Optus Sport can be accessed from a wide range of devices. Check out the complete list below:
You can watch content both live and on demand. If you tune in late, you can still join the live stream. Besides football matches, you can access news, highlights, interviews and bonus content like documentaries.
As mentioned, the platform also offers Mini Matches in a range of formats. Mini Classics are also available and the same principle applies, but for matches from previous seasons.
It also has Optus Sport Original features, a section dedicated to Fantasy Premier League and more.
On top of football, the website and app also have a section dedicated to wellness and fitness.
It features lots of workouts including yoga, dance, cardio and core strength and you can find them for any fitness level.
Optus Sport isn't the only sports streaming service available in Australia. If you're looking to expand your horizons, check out some sports streaming alternatives.
