"A groundbreaking crime drama, this series redefined television storytelling. Tony Soprano's complex journey and the rich characters make it iconic. "
New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano deals with personal and professional issues in his home and business life that affect his mental state, leading him to seek professional psychiatric counselling.
Many of the most popular TV shows of the last decade wouldn't exist if it wasn't for The Sopranos. The hard-hitting crime drama series proved that TV audiences were hungry for more mature content and that the short-form nature of mainstream television didn't prevent shows from tackling large, complex themes as subversive as those featured in books, movies and plays. Without The Sopranos, we might never have enjoyed the likes of The Wire, This is Us or even Game of Thrones.
In even better news, the acclaimed series, widely considered among the best TV shows ever made, successfully stands the test of time. Some details may feel dated now, but the themes it touches upon are universal.
The HBO hit revolves around Tony Soprano, a mobster who finds it challenging to juggle his criminal responsibilities with his life at home. When he starts to experience panic attacks, he reaches out to a psychiatrist for help.
Created by David Chase, The Sopranos lasted for 6 seasons, culminating in a revolutionary series finale diehard fans still like to dissect. With a top-notch cast, intriguing storylines and a complex antihero in the lead, it makes for a thought-provoking and satisfying binge.
The Sopranos prequel: The Many Saints of Newark
In the era of reboots and revivals, it was just a matter of time before we were going to get a new chapter in the Sopranos saga. James Gandolfini sadly passed away in 2013, so a continuation of the original wouldn't have worked. Then why not a prequel?
Enter The Many Saints of Newark, a Sopranos film that aims to show that legends aren't born, they're made. The action kicks off in late 1960s Newark, New Jersey and revisits some of the characters we are already somewhat familiar with.
We follow a young Anthony "Tony" Soprano as he comes of age just as rival gangsters start to challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family. Meanwhile, Dickie Moltisanti, Christopher Moltisanti's father, struggles with all sorts of professional responsibilities. His influence will prove crucial in turning Tony into the mob boss we all know and love.
Tony will be played in the prequel by none other than Michael Gandolfini, James Gandolfini's son. The cast also includes Alessandro Nivola as Dickie, Jon Bernthal as Giovanni "Johnny Boy" Soprano, Corey Stoll as Corrado "Junior" Soprano Jr., Vera Farmiga as Livia Soprano, John Magaro as Silvio Dante and Billy Magnussen as Paulie "Walnuts" Gualtieri. Plus Leslie Odom Jr., Ray Liotta, Michela De Rossi and more also show up. The film was co-created by David Chase and Lawrence Konner.
As more details about the film are released, The Many Saints of Newark is shaping up to be essential viewing for not only long-time Sopranos fans but also movie buffs who enjoy a solid crime drama. Mark your calendars for 1 October 2021 – the prequel will be available in cinemas and on HBO Max in the US.
Addictive as all hell, David Chase's stunningly original drama offers detailed character work and riveting suspense while displaying a flair for both black comedy and unpredictable twists. Throw in powerhouse acting by the show's lead, James Gandolfini, and you've got The Sopranos, a TV series that is nothing short of essential viewing.
