There was a time when watching your favourite TV show was dictated not by your desires, but by the schedule of the TV networks. There was the frustration of last-minute schedule changes, episodes being played out of order or a network refusing to play a show's finale months after it aired overseas. Or you wouldn't even know where to watch as it was just nowhere to be found, as no network in Australia had grabbed the show or inexplicably held off from airing it.

Obviously streaming services changed the game, providing the entertainment people desire when they want it. You can log in to the likes of Netflix, Stan, Prime Video, Disney Plus, BINGE, Paramount Plus, Apple TV Plus or Foxtel Now and watch a massive range of popular shows and movies at a reasonable price.

It's not perfect though. There are plenty of shows without a local streaming home. Plus, some shows have different seasons on different platforms, while others are on multiple platforms because the rights holders like to share. Or a movie in a series may be on a certain platform while the sequel is on another.

According to Finder's TV databases as of 5 September 2022, surprisingly Foxtel has the most TV shows available with a whopping 3,698 series. That beats out Netflix and Prime Video who round out the podium with over 2,100 each. Though it is worth noting those Foxtel numbers are slightly inflated as technically sports matches are TV shows on the platform which boosts its figures.

To help guide you through the confusion of where to watch your favourite TV shows and movies, we've pulled together a list of some of the most popular titles and outlined where they can be streamed in Australia.
