Luca was initially supposed to be a theatrical release, but the movie was redirected to Disney+ due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We're not complaining one bit. Given Pixar's impeccable track record, this new animation will be a smash – funny, endearing and highly enjoyable for kids and adults alike. The studio's previous hits include Toy Story, Ratatouille, The Incredibles, WALL-E and Finding Nemo, to name only a few.

The plot follows young Luca, voiced by the talented Jacob Tremblay (Room). He and his friend Alberto (Jack Dylan Grazer, whom you might know from It) are sea monsters from another world, living just below the sea's surface. However, they can take on human form when on land, so they set out to explore the Italian town of Portorosso.

Along the way, they make a new friend, Giulia (Emma Berman), who helps them stand up to bullies and teaches them more about the unknown world of humans. Together, they enjoy a summer filled with pasta and gelato, as well as adrenaline-filled scooter rides. Yet, their true nature might still stand in their way of truly fitting in. Sounds like both a coming-of-age and fish out of water story, all rolled into one.

The movie is the feature-length directorial debut of Academy Award nominee Enrico Casarosa, responsible for acclaimed animated short La Luna. The voice cast also features Marco Barricelli, Saverio Raimondo, Maya Rudolph, Jim Gaffigan, Sandy Martin, Giacomo Gianniotti, Marina Massironi and Sacha Baron Cohen. If you feel like escaping to sunny Italy this June, Luca has your back.
