Our expert says: Gritty Prison Drama

"Oz is a gritty and unflinching look at life inside a maximum-security prison. The performances are powerful, and the show doesn't shy away from exploring the harsh realities of incarceration. "

Synopsis

The late 90s show Oz is a fascinating look into an experimental prison facility where the inmates just try to survive each day.

Cast and crew

  • Ernie Hudson
  • J.K. Simmons
  • Lee Tergesen
Not to be confused with the Land of Oz from The Wizard of Oz, HBO's Oz is the nickname for the Oswald State Correctional Facility. The different areas are actually named after places in the Land of Oz with the series focusing on the inmates in level 4 – called Emerald City.

These criminals struggle to live every day as they fight for basic needs and to survive long enough to get out. The rules in this block are all experimental, with drug trades and violence running rampant. The series is narrated and woven together by inmate Augustus Hill who provides the audience with context and sums up each episode.
