Where to find the best travel deals

We round up the best travel deals we can find on the internet above, but if you're looking for other sites to find great-priced travel deals, consider checking out these sites:

For cheap flights, head over to our flight deals page or look at flight aggregators where you can compare prices from different sites. Some aggregators include:

For cheap hotels, we find the best deals we can and add them to our hotel deals page. You can also check the deals sections of popular hotel booking sites like Wotif and Lastminute.com.au for the latest offers on hotels in Australia and worldwide. Like flights, there are hotel aggregators out there, which we've listed below.

For cheap holiday packages, you can either search for pre-packaged holiday deals - which often have loads of extras thrown in, like meals or excursions - or a DIY holiday from a site that offers deeper discounts the more you book. We put the best of the best on our holiday and tour deals page, but you can also check out these sites to find low-priced holiday packages:

How can I get cheap holiday deals?

Often hear of friends nabbing incredible bargains on holidays while you feel like you're being gouged? Check out our tips and tricks to make sure you get the best price on your next flight, hotel stay, holiday and even attractions tickets.

  • Check if there are any coupon codes or discounts available. We work with hundreds of brands and share any available code we can find as well as negotiate exclusive offers so you can save even more. So before you start entering your credit card information, check our travel deals finder to see how much you can save.
  • Wait for a sales event to book. The end of the financial year, Black Friday and Boxing Day are some of the year's biggest travel deals events, where we see huge savings on just about all types of holidays. We've created an annual travel deals events calendar to help you keep track of them all.
  • Know when "happy hour" sales are. Virgin Australia has a Thursday Happy Hour sale, Jetstar hosts a Friday Fare Frenzy and the list goes on. If you've got a preferred brand, find out when it regularly discounts fares with our dedicated flight sales page.
  • Travel during the shoulder seasons or off-seasons. If the weather isn't perfect, you'll likely see fewer crowds at your destination, attractions and resorts. Being okay with cooler weather or a spot of rain on your parade can result in major savings. The same applies if you're not restricted to travelling during peak periods like Christmas/New Year or during school holidays.
  • Be open to a new destination. It's not always easy to predict which destinations are going to be included in a sale, so it's best to keep a travel style in mind rather than a specific destination. If you're keen on a Fijian escape but only Vanuatu fares are discounted, you may be disappointed. But if you're open to any beach destination you may just discover your new favourite spot – and save a ton!

What's the cheapest day to book a vacation package?

While it's quite well-known that Tuesdays and Wednesdays are some of the cheapest days to book a trip, we've got some other pointers to keep in mind. To score the best offer, it's key to know when the sales run. Events such as Boxing Day and Black Friday are great if it's towards the end of the year and you can hold off until they arrive. Year on year, we see massive reductions on airfares, accommodation, tours, experiences, car hire and holiday packages.

It's also worth knowing that Jetstar drops its Fare Frenzy on Fridays and Virgin Australia hosts Happy Hour on Thursdays every week. From experience, try booking earlier in the morning as seats tend to be cheaper than those you find in the evenings in non-sale periods.

For a cruise deal, January is known for its discounted sailings.

Where is the cheapest holiday destination?

One of the cheapest Australian destinations is the Gold Coast. In the past we've had flights to the sunshine city as cheap as $19. In terms of accommodation, as a result of many hotel options, you can score a hotel room for as little as $55 a night.

Internationally, one of the cheapest holiday destinations has to be Bali. Not only are flights from Australia to Indonesia relatively inexpensive (flights could be scored from $89 on sale pre-coronavirus), but travellers can also expect bargains in accommodation. A look into peak-season periods reveals hotels from $20 a night.

How far in advance should you book a holiday to get the best deal?

If the time of your booking is late in the year, we definitely recommend holding out until the Black Friday and Boxing Day sales. However, if waiting for these sales isn't ideal, fear not.

For the organised traveller, it's key to plan any major trips at least six months in advance. The sweet spot is between 6 and 12 months prior to your desired departure, as it gives you enough time to compare and find the cheapest options for airfares, accommodation and activities. For airfares, you want to book at least three months before take-off. Many airlines, hotels and tour companies also host early-bird deals that can save you some money.

For the smaller trips you may have in mind, a buffer period of one to three months is ideal.
